Dreaming Fingers : Tactile picture books for children

Dreaming Fingers is an initiative of The Karadi Tales Company, Chennai India and Lemniscaat, Rotterdam Netherlands to fill the enormous void in the area of tactile picture books for the blind and visually impaired. The vision at Dreaming Fingers is to create beautiful picture books that can be seen, read, and touched by all children. Its aim is to
  • Offer a larger choice of tactile picture books to the children of every country
  • research materials and methods that can offer distinctive tactile and visual experience of a variety of objects and concepts
  • develop this kind of publishing
  • develop manufacturing processes that allow such books to be replicated in large numbers
  • discover the culture of others
  • sensitize all children to the seeing world of the visually impaired
Dreaming Fingers defines its productions as Tactile Picture Books. Some of its distinctive features are
  • Usage of a wide variety of materials, hence providing a wider variety of textures. There are 27 different textured materials used in The Very Hungry Caterpillar
  • Usage of textures not only as an allusion to object feel (eg. Caterpillar), but also as an allusion of concept (eg. Hot ( yellow silk) brightness of the sun, cool (white satin) effulgence of the moon).
  • Exploration of contours as an added dimension of shapes through the use of multilayered elements and embroidered elements.
  • Retaining colour as an important element for the benefit of partially sighted and sighted children.
  • Retaining large-sized text font alongside Braille for the benefit of partially sighted and sighted children.
As a result of the above features, Dreaming Fingers Tactile Picture Books will be books that all children can enjoy.
    • for the completely visually impaired child, the shapes, contours and features provide a window to the visual element
    • for the partially sighted child, the hazy colours and images gain definition through shapes, contours and textures
    • for the child with special needs who learns through the sensorial or kinesthetic modalities
    • for the sighted child, the hazy colours and definition through shapes, contours and textures
Bright and beautiful, painstakingly and exquisitely crafted, The Very Hungry Caterpillar Tactile Picture Book offers every child an opportunity to touch and feel the illustrations thus opening a world of dreams and imagination through their fingertips.
