Regardless of whether it would be a success or failure, the group decided to come out with more titles. They recorded four stories with Naseeruddin Shah, and released them one at a time.
"We wanted different voices for Karadi. So, we approached (actor) Saeed Jaffrey. He is a sweet old man, and not difficult to approach at all. He was so enthusiastic that he wanted to give voices for all characters in the story."
This was followed by Karadi Tales in Hindi, with translations and a voiceover by Gulzar.
"Naseer introduced us to (lyricist-poet-filmmaker) Gulzarsaab, saying he thought he was the best person for a translation. Every time Gulzarsaab wrote a verse, he read it out to us, so we decided to have his voice for the story as well."
By then, they started getting a whole lot of enquiries about mythological stories. Soon enough, a series with the voice of Girish Karnad arrived.
"The mythological stories sold more in the US, which is funny, considering we didn't look at that market at all. We felt India was the biggest market, but there were many NRIs who had came to India and gone back with Karadi Tales. We now have three distributors in America."
The fame of Karadi Tales continues to spread. Enquiries are now coming in from countries like Australia and South Africa.
