The Story and the Song wins the Comic Con India Award for Best Illustrated Book for Children

What happens to stories that don’t get told, and songs that don’t get sung? The Story and the Song, a picture book from Karadi Tales, answers this question, and does so with stunning illustrations. Artist Ayswarya Sankaranarayanan won the Comic Con India Award for the Best Illustrated Book for Children for this title that’s an adaptation – by author Manasi Subramaniam – of a Tamil folktale.

“While researching for the book, I looked up old family photos of my parents and their friends, asking them questions, trying to put together a Tamil village slightly earlier in time when electricity was a rarity in villages,” says Sankaranarayanan. “I could find useful clues for old kitchen utensils, house layouts etc. For the style, I was particularly inspired by Mysore manuscript painting of the 18-19th centuries – especially one manuscript of the Bhagavata Purana had a breathtaking colour palette and lovely stylized human figures”.
